I directed this production remotely during the height of the global pandemic. In this collaboration with The Flint Institute of Arts (FIA), we spoke to Flint community leaders and discussed their work to provide spaces of art and culture to the people of Flint, Michigan.
The Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) is the second-largest art museum in Michigan and one of the largest museum-connected community art schools in the United States. The FIA makes art accessible and inclusive to all members of their community through permanent collection and temporary exhibitions: guided tours; lectures and community dialogues; art classes, workshops, and studio demonstrations; gallery, studio, and outreach programs for PreK-12, Head Start, and homeschool students; films and videos; print, audio, and multimedia resources.
A little background: I helped launch INSIGHT in 2011 when colleague Mark Oppenheim proposed a Charlie-Rose style format in which to interview thought leaders from the non-profit sector. Our missions aligned. Since, we've produced hundreds of interviews shot in cities around the country. Initially we did this with a mobile studio. I flew in with backdrops and equipment and hired local crews to execute three camera setups and same day edits from hotel conference rooms. Our process was simple but effective; these segments grew in popularity and demand and INSIGHT went on to secure PBS partnership and local syndication. The days of our mobile studio setups were over. I remember them fondly.
